Kayaam House, Tangalle

A Spiritual Sanctuary by the Indian Ocean

First Impressions

Tucked in the verdant embrace of Sri Lanka's jungle and cradled against a pristine stretch of golden beach, the Kayaam House materializes like a radiant jewel. Opened in 2022, this architectural wonder, conceived by a local architect, lies in waiting at the end of a rugged dirt road - an embodiment of untouched beauty and native allure.

Despite its recent unveiling, Kayaam House effortlessly blends the freshness of its creation with the deep-rooted richness of local heritage. An ancient temple door from Jaffna stands proudly amid elegant Dutch antiques. Accents of blue dance on doors and windows, while the walls serve as a canvas for local abstract art.

Inspired by the legendary Geoffrey Bawa, the dining room is a testament to the harmonious interplay of the interior and exterior, with its breezy arches and tranquil grey pillars. Cane pendant lights dangle from above, casting a warm glow over the locally-crafted teak tables and chairs that spill onto the terrace. Leading from a fragrant frangipani-framed, glass-still pool to a private beach adorned with welcoming sun loungers, the scene is nothing short of mesmerizing.

My first interaction with Kayaam House was under the early morning sun. Its silhouette, a mere week old, radiated a tranquillity that hinted at a richly storied past, a nod to its former life as a private residence.

The warmth of the staff, radiant in their traditional attire, was a delightful welcome. Their heartfelt smiles and the refreshing coolness of the welcome drinks and towels served as a prelude to the hospitality that would become a defining feature of my stay at Kayaam House.

Our initiation into the architectural marvel of Kayaam House began with a grand staircase, serving as a portal to this slice of paradise. As we ascended, we were met with a breathtaking vista of meticulously manicured gardens, a sky-reflecting azure pool, and the boundless Indian Ocean, all under the watchful gaze of the main lobby. This was just the beginning of our journey into the heart of Kayaam House, a promise of unforgettable experiences to come.

Rooms

Our chosen sanctuary, the Ocean Room, was one of six select chambers at Kayaam House - a haven of sophistication and comfort. Taking a stripped-back approach, the room allowed its high-ceilinged grandeur to shine, adorned with a snug wooden bed, teak furniture, and grounding textures. The bed, though a touch firm, cradled us in comfort, adding to the calming aura intensified by the lullaby of the ocean waves, subtly serenading us through soundproofed windows.

Our room's pièce de résistance was the private bath on the terrace, opening up to mesmerizing vistas of Kayaam House's expansive grounds, the tranquil pool, and the hypnotic rhythm of the ocean. Accompanied by calming abstract art and top-notch Bang and Olufsen tech, the Ocean Room proved to be a cocoon of tranquility..

We also had the chance to peek into one of the two Palm Suites - an indulgent escape offering far more than just a room. With a private terrace, an indulgent oversized Jacuzzi, and teak furniture, the suite felt like an intimate refuge within the larger Eden of Kayaam House. This private nook within the secluded property mirrors the philosophy of Kayaam House, proving its dedication to providing pockets of serene luxury, nestling each guest in their personalized paradise

Dining

At Kayaam House, there's no written menu or rigid meal schedules. What we found was a bounty of superb food (three courses at lunch, four at supper) - a culinary treat that exceeded our expectations. At the helm of the kitchen was the masterful chef, trained in some of Sri Lanka’s finest five-star hotels, and every meal was a testament to his artistic flair.

The chef would propose tempting meal suggestions, but there was always an invitation to request something specific if our taste buds desired. Every dish was a testament to the art of 'slow cooking', a gentle nurturing of ingredients until they revealed their deepest flavors onto our plates.

The crowning glory was the breakfast, a medley of local Sri Lankan delights, treating us to a taste of the island's rich culinary heritage.

Amenities

Kayaam House boasts an array of amenities that echo the themes of tranquillity and revitalisation. The spa, with its emphasis on holistic therapies and organic ingredients, was an oasis of wellbeing where each treatment was akin to a melodious symphony, its soothing strokes delicately alleviating the weariness of our journey.

Deeply comforting Balinese massages are the specialty of the in-house masseuse, Ariati, whose skilled hands transformed our spa visits into deeply restorative experiences. This sanctuary, much like the rest of Kayaam House, invited us to immerse ourselves in the spirit of relaxation and wellness.

The yoga sessions were equally enchanting. Held in the airy yoga shala tucked away in the garden and overlooking the beach, these sessions were nothing short of a spiritual journey. As we flowed through the asanas, the rhythmic symphony of the ocean waves and rustling leaves was our guide, imbuing each pose with a profound sense of inner peace and serenity. In this corner of paradise, the yoga practice transcended the physical, leading us on a path of mindfulness and tranquillity.
